Region-switching guide
Switching your Apple ID region is free, but there are gotchas. Here is what to know before you click.
Before you switch — three checks
- 1
Spend down your current store credit. Balance does NOT carry across regions — anything left is forfeited.
- 2
Cancel auto-renewing subscriptions (Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions). After switching, renewals will fail silently but the subscription stays active until period end.
- 3
Pause Family Sharing if you are the organizer.
Switching country/region
- 1
iPhone: Settings → [Apple ID name] → Media & Purchases → View Account → Country/Region → Change.
- 2
Pick the destination country and agree to the new terms.
- 3
Set payment method to None — this avoids any required local card.
- 4
Use a real-format street + ZIP from the destination country (Google for examples).
- 5
Save. App Store switches over immediately.
Topping up without a local card
- 1
Apple Gift Card codes are the universal solution. Buy from resellers (Mobixie, PockyMall, Offgamers, Whale-A) at face value + 5–15%.
- 2
Redeem: App Store top-right avatar → Redeem Gift Card or Code → enter the 16-char code starting with X.
- 3
Mainland China: top up natively via Alipay / WeChat. No gift card needed.
- 4
TR, AR, NG and other inflation-prone regions have thinner gift-card supply — confirm a source before switching.
Account-policy risks
- 1
Frequent switches (3+ per month) trigger review, especially with subscription purchases.
- 2
VPN + gift card + foreign address combos are generally fine, but rapid jurisdiction changes can prompt re-verification.
- 3
Apple does not explicitly ban region switching, but the Media Services Terms require accurate info — in the worst case the account locks. Use a secondary Apple ID.
- 4
Domestic cards billing foreign-region services then disputing via local return rules will get flagged.
Common patterns (anecdotal, not advice)
- 1
One-time premium apps (Procreate, Things, Bear): TR / VN / IN are the usual low-price regions.
- 2
AI subscriptions (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini Premium): AR / TR / NG are typically cheapest by headline but watch the gift-card markup.
- 3
Streaming (Netflix, YouTube Premium): India / Turkey / Argentina family plans are best value but require local payment — outside the scope of this site.
- 4
First-party services (iCloud+, Apple One): native payment only — region-switching is rarely worth it.
